Vietnam was a fascinating combination of cultural Asia and western materialism. From many fantastically coloured hill tribes, to ghettos of war victims and those born deformed, to the elite of Hanoi.

Some travelers aren't that keen on Vietnam because of all the controls on your movements - to see anything of interest is not really possible to achieve independently, for the government has made it really expensive to do so (travel on trains is for example 500% more than the locals pay), yet taking a government sponsored tour is cheap. These tours are usually just you and a bunch of like minded backpackers, so no problems there, but it does mean that whatever you see is somewhat sanitised.
